If you happen to get out on the water immediately after commercial fishing pressure, you may find painfully slow days; however, if you happen to fish 2 or 3 tides after the commercial fishing has ended, you will find lots and lots of Sockeye Salmon entering the Kasilof River. The confluence area and below has been a little bit better as anglers who fish the entire day have been able to come close to a limit. The river is still quite cold and clear, and has grown to a size big enough to accommodate massive quantities of floaters. 5/25/2020 - May fishing charters have been outstanding thus far, with lots of great folks and plenty of smiles! The Rainbow Trout fishing on the Russian is still quite good. The river has also been relatively calm with minimal traffic (except for weekends). Since the bait opener, we’ve heard of a few boats on the Kasilof River netting kings every day and some boats landing upwards of 3 on one trip! Lots of King Salmon were spotted being hooked and rolling in many holes from the the Traps all the way down to Last Chance. There are plenty of local lakes that provide a nice and quiet fishing opportunity in the Soldotna, Kenai, Kasilof, Cooper Landing and Moose Pass areas. Silver Salmon fishing has been slow. With the current COVID-19 pandemic mandates in place, it is important to only travel when it is an absolute necessity as to not spread the Coronavirus and endanger our fellow anglers and neighbors. Fishing should continue to improve over the next week. September is when the Kenai Peninsula can get red hot for fishing. Remember, it is important to release big spawning fish, especially wild hens. We have had several opportunities to get out in the boat as well as walk-in opportunities near Cooper Landing. The upper and mid river are excellent wade and drift boat fishing, which lends itself to lightweight spin casting and fly fishing for our amazing Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden, and the lower river is known for back trolling and spin casting to dime bright salmon coming in on the tides. Several Pink Salmon have also shown up as well as a few Coho (Silver) Salmon. Though the Kasilof River is closing to bait soon, the tides continue to bring lots and lots of fish, making this the best year for hatchery King Salmon so far in our early history! Expect the numbers and fishing to improve within the next 5-10 days. We were still able to eek out a limit of 3 fish each for 2 anglers, but it was not easy to say the least. It depends on the section of the river, but anything from T8 -T14 on floating lines will help your flies get down into the strike zone.
